Abstract
Throughout the nineteenth century, seafaring work changed dramatically in Le Havre which became an important crossroads in international trade. New trades were introduced by the transition to steam (mechanics, lubricators, boiler men, co al heavers). Whereas spatial and professional segregation were the rule on board, in town this was not necessarily the case. In the city between 1830 and 1914, registered boiler men (after 1857) maintained certain traits which distinguished them from other seamen: specific pathologies, a more rural socio-geographic origin and distinctive social interaction. Nevertheless, these traits did not prevent them from integrating the category of seamen through lodgings and marriage patterns. Yet, because of their mechanical trades and their participation in strikes at the end of the century, they formed a link between seamen and other workers in the port contributing to forge a workers identity in the port city.
